Blackjack - also referred to as '21' and 'pontoon' - is a card game that nowadays is usually seen in a betting house with people attempting their fortune on achieving the elusive '21'. It is widely believed that the game came into existence in France around the 1600's. However, as with many other gambling games the precise development of the game is a mystery.

Pontoon was introduced to the US following the French Revolution, but the game didn't become popular in the betting houses until the house offered payouts as a bonus. This was the only method that appeared to get people gambling on twenty-one. One variation on the bonus payout was for a gambler to make 'twenty-one' with the blackjack card (valued at 10 points) and an ace (valued at 11 points). With the increasing appeal of the game the bonus pay outs were canceled but the name 'blackjack' lasted.

Chemin de fer isn't just about getting a straight '21', but the main adventure is to defeat the dealer without going 'bust'. The casino obviously has a house edge over the gambling players over the long term, but with chemin de fer the gambler holds on to an element of choice.

Since 1931 when America initial legalized betting, chemin de fer has developed into a classic betting house card game. Furthermore, it's the joining of both ability and mathematics utilized in chemin de fer that has made the game hugely loved. Pontoon gives an alluring adventure to any academic, mathematician or betting player looking to analyze the strategy of the game.
